The above photo of Joey Peterson who finished first place in the 4A boys cross country state championship is probably my favorite photo that I took this term. I really like how the background clearly shows that it is a meet with the crowd and the other runners but they don't take away from the main subject. The main runner's whole body is in the frame and both of his feet are off the ground so I did a good job of freezing the action which was the main goal of the assignment.
It reflects what I learned in photojournalism by his expression. A huge part of good photojournalism photos is the expression of the subject. Not only does the main subject have a good facial expression but you can tell the other boys do to. It is also a good example of how to crop a photo for the paper because that is also super important. There is no clutter! And lastly, the main thing that I learned this term is that good photojournalism tells a story and I think this photo does that.
I think the main thing that I improved at this term is how comfortable I am in approaching people to take their photos. All the photos I have ever taken have been pre arranged and almost always with someone I know. I specifically chose to do portraits for my photo story to challenge myself in this area.
My three goals for this class were to find out what I enjoy about photojournalism to see if it is a likely career path for me, get more comfortable taking photos of strangers, and to learn more about camera settings to improve my photos. This isn't a camera specific course, so obviously I did not learn THAT much about the settings but I defiantly feel more educated about my Nikon. I learned basic skills like ISO and shutter speed that really helped me take better action photos. I would say that goal was met. Like I was saying before, I am more comfortable approaching strangers with a camera but I have a long way to go. Overall I would say that goal was also met. Lastly, I did learn a lot about photojournalism as a career. I know that I want my career to be involved with photography in some way, but I do not believe photojournalism specifically is for me. Good or bad, that goal was also met. So I would say it was a very successful term!
