Sarah Woosley One of the most well-known faces around Philomath is Sarah Woosley. Sarah is the Associate Director at the Philomath Youth Activities Club, more commonly known as PYAC. She is responsible for personnel management, grant writing and management, community relations, and day to day Clubhouse operations. Sarah says, "it is a great balance because I get to do work in the community and with agencies around the county, but also still get to work with the kids." Sarah has been with PYAC since she moved to Corvallis in 2001. A few years later she and her family moved to Philomath after growing to love the town and community.  Blake Ecker Another familiar face around town is Blake Ecker. The above photo of Joey Peterson who finished first place in the 4A boys cross country state championship is probably my favorite photo that I took this term. I really like how the background clearly shows that it is a meet with the crowd and the other runners but they don't take away from the main subject. The main runner's whole body is in the frame and both of his feet are off the ground so I did a good job of freezing the action which was the main goal of the assignment. It reflects what I learned in photojournalism by his expression. A huge part of good photojournalism photos is the expression of the subject. Not only does the main subject have a good facial expression but you can tell the other boys do to. It is also a good example of how to crop a photo for the paper because that is also super important. There is no clutter! “Photography has shaped the way I look at the world; it has taught me to look beyond myself and capture the world outside.” This is by far my favorite quote from the book “It’s What I Do” by Lynsey Addario. It immediately stood out to me because this is the way I strive to view photography. To see the beauty in everything, and not just the surface level. This is what Lynsey Addario does throughout the entire book. She has written a story of how the relentless pursuit of truth, in virtually every major theater of war in the 21st century has shaped her life. Each and every one of Addario’s photographs are captivating in their own way. I would say the main thing that separates Addario’s photos from other photographers are the stories they tell. She has a gift of seeing people and capturing them in her photos. A good example of this is on page 192 of Bibiane, a twenty-eight year old from South Kivu. The only physical indicator of her pain is her tears, but Addario makes it so much deeper....

In the second half of the book, I defiantly think chapters 7 and 11 are the most compelling. I think that both of them are filled with such raw emotion and they talk about things that we don't ever have to even think about. Chapter 7 stood out to me because of the way Addario described women. Even the title is "Women are Casualties of Their Birthplace." This chapter is about when Lynsey finally travelled to Africa to shoot the lives of the people there living in poverty and fear. Here she interviewed dozens of African women who have been through hell and back. The chapter ends with her describing different things that happened to each one of the women. From being raped to robbed, to beaten, to getting AIDS. Although it was very compelling to read, I ranked chapter 11 as number one for multiple reasons. 19 year-old Caleb Carlisle enjoys a cup of coffee before work at the new café in town, The Dizzy Hen on Main Street. He says they serve the best coffee in town.  23 year-old Grace Safotu serves donuts and pastries at Nutcakes. She has worked there for a year and eight months and says her favorite part about working at the bakery is seeing people's reactions when they see their popular baked goods, such as their huge fritters and bacon maple bars.   Philomath's main attraction, the Art Museum. Inside you can find art done by almost anyone who has attended the Philomath Elementary School. It is also a place where they put on events such as retirement parties and town meetings. 

MY NEIGHBORHOOD/MY HOMETOWN I am going to photograph Philomath because that is the town where I currently live and where I grew up. For my photos I have a couple different options in mind. I was thinking one of my photos would be (if it turns out) a photo from the outside of the new cafe the Dizzy Hen with people sitting at one of the tables against the window. Another idea is of the Philomath Art Museum. I would take a very low shot of people walking in or out. I also think it would be a good idea to do someone working at Dairy Queen. I also might shoot the local barber cutting someones hair on Main Street. The cafe shot will definitely pose the biggest challenge because I have to have just the right angle and light to show the people inside and the sign on the window. Philomath High School junior, Rivers Nunyo pushes through the 3.1 mile race. The 2018 OSAA Cross Country State Championships were held at Lane Community College in Eugene, OR.  16 year-old Hannah Hernandez from Philomath races to the finish line. Hernandez finished 5th place overall in the girls 4A State Championship Saturday, November 3rd. Senior Joey Peterson from Marist Catholic High School finished 1st place in the 4A boys State Championship. Marist Catholic High School won overall for both boys and girls 4A schools.

19 year-old Maddy Meggy works as a barista at G3 Sports and Fitness on Highway 99. She also works for the gym's childcare program. She has been working for G3 for a little over a year now and she loves it. She says the members and her coworkers are all so nice and that makes it a great working environment. Maddy is currently taking classes at Linn Benton Community College on top of working and enjoys hiking with friends in the little free time she has.

I really enjoyed listening to Karl Maasdam on Monday. Two tips he gave that stood out to me were to NOT LOOK AT THE PHOTOS IN THE MIDDLE OF SHOOTING and to look for background first rather than the subject first while shooting sports photography. I wrote that first one in all caps because that is something I have a hard time not doing. I always want to look at photos right after I take them but when you do that you most often miss the action. So for next weeks assignment I am really going to challenge myself to stay away from the playback button. The other good tip was to find background first. I think this one is really great when shooting action photos because the action will come to you, and that will probably turn out better than you trying to chase down the action. For our assignment I am going to try and change up backgrounds and see what comes into my lens when I am all focused. I am going to try and shoot the LBCC girls volleyball game tonight. I chose to research photographer Lee Jeffries for this assignment. The reason I chose Lee Jeffries is because his photos really caught my eye. They are so distinctly his work and I think that is really cool for a photographer to have. His "claim to fame" is photographing black and white images of homeless people all around the world. My favorite picture of Jeffries is the one below. This photo, like many of Jeffries work shows so much emotion. This one is a little different because most of them focus on the subjects eyes but I really like how this one shows so much emotion without even needing to see the eyes. LBCC student Travis Peterson digs into an apple pie for a pie eating contest at the Harvest Festival on Friday, October 26th. LBCC student Kaela Bauer celebrates winning the title of best costume at the Harvest Festival costume contest held in the courtyard at the Albany Campus. Bauer was dressed as Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter.  Students of Linn-Benton Community College wait patiently for the winners of the costume contest to be announced at the 2018 Fall Festival.

LYNDSEY ADDARIO I am absolutely loving Lyndsey Addario’s book It’s What I Do. I think it’s incredible what she has been through and that even when she’s in the lowest of lows or her life is literally in danger that she continues to shoot and those experiences drive her and make her love it even more. It’s amazing that she has this calling that very few people do. Especially as a woman! In her book she mentions in multiple places that she was if not the only female, one of very few females in the workplace. There have been two things that have really made an impression on me. One being her obligations to capture even the most extreme of circumstances. Specifically what I have in mind is the end of chapter 4 and the beginning of chapter 5 when she is sitting on the couch in her apartment and the news of the 9/11 terrorist attacks comes on the news and she immediately knows what that means for her. NPPA Code of Ethics 1. The standard that stands out the MOST to me under the Code of Ethics for visual journalists is number four which reads, "Treat all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy. Intrude on private moments of grief only when the public has an overriding and justifiable need to see." I just thought it was interesting how it talks about compassion but then follows up with " intrude on private moments..." I understand what it is saying but it seems interesting that the justification for it revolves around the public and not the person grieving. It is a journalists job to capture things for the public but I feel like there is a line that shouldn't be crossed when it has to do with a person suffering.  2. Forty-seven-year-old Clay Carlisle is the Head Pastor at the Philomath First Baptist Church in Philomath, Oregon. He moved to the small town of Philomath with his wife Julie Carlisle and three kids Caleb (19), Selah (16), and Dani (12) in 2005 after being offered the job. He is originally from Amarillo, Texas, where he was a youth pastor for many years. You will most likely find him cheering on the Cowboys or on the tennis courts challenging his oldest daughter to a match.   

Topic 1 There are two possible subjects for my environmental portrait and mugshot. The first person I have in mind is Clay Carlisle who is the pastor at Philomath First Baptist Church. He is best known for his title as Philomath Pastor and is very liked among the congregation. The best environment to shoot Clay would be on the stage of the church where he speaks every Sunday morning. A good prop would be the pulpit and maybe a bible. I can go to this person directly to contact him. The other person I had in mind was my hairstylist! Her name is Paige Ragsdale and I can messenger her. She has a huge passion for working as a hairstylist. Her outgoing and sweet personality makes her a perfect subject. She just started up her own salon and is known around Philomath and Corvallis as the super sweet hair stylist! I am choosing to research more about the famous photographer, Steve McCurry. Steve McCurry was born in 1950 in a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied film at Pennsylvania University before going to work for a local newspaper. After that he made his first of many trips to India. The thing that most stands out about his photos is the attention to detail of the portraits he takes and the authenticity of the people. I think what really launched his "fame" career was founding ImagineAsia is 2004. A non profit organization to help provide educational resources and opportunities to children and young adults in Afghanistan. I am hooked on Lynsey Addario's It's What I do book!! I think it is a very captivating story that makes it hard to put the book down. What has really impressed me is how she explains such horrific and terrifying moments with such simplicity. About me- My name is Alisha, and I am a sophomore here at LBCC. Currently I am majoring in kinesiology in hopes of becoming a pediatric occupational therapist. I took this class as an elective because I really enjoy photography and capturing moments. I have some photography experience doing senior photo shoots, baby shoots, engagement shoots, and some wedding practice. Goals- My major goal this course is to learn about camera settings. I enjoy taking photos with my Nikon camera but often don't know which setting to have it on to get the best shot. Another goal I have is to be more comfortable taking photos of strangers. I am a fairly shy person so approaching random people to take their photo is way outside my comfort zone. My last goal is to discover what I like about photojournalism specifically to see if I may be interested in it as a career.
